Korean Michigan Prepares to Overhaul Vaporizer with Flavor Ban and Heavy Tax
Michigan is reportedly on the verge of enacting a new vaporizer bill that could have a significant impact on vapers and the vaping industry. According to recent news, state legislators, in collaboration with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, are planning to push forward an anti-vaping bill in the state legislature, potentially implementing it immediately after the November 5th elections. The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) has updated their call to action, urging Michiganders to voice their opposition.
It’s crucial for vaping enthusiasts and businesses in Michigan to actively oppose the proposed bill, which includes a ban on flavored vaporizers and a substantial 57% wholesale tax on these products.
Initially released on January 5, 2024, the bill aims to eliminate the opportunity for people to purchase popular flavored vaporizers and other low-risk nicotine products, pricing the remaining products out of reach for many consumers. This legislation, driven by anti-tobacco and anti-vaping activist groups, is similar to previous bills introduced in the state.
The comprehensive eight-bill package contains several components that could negatively affect those who vape or use other low-risk nicotine products:
- A ban on the addition of any flavors other than tobacco in all nicotine and tobacco products (SB 649)
- A 57% wholesale tax on all vaporizer products, nicotine pouches, and smokeless tobacco (SB 648)
- A potential ban on online sales to consumers (SB 648)
- The repeal of local restrictions on vaporizer or tobacco products (SB 647)
